Othello Tower in North Cyprus

There are some truly magical places to discover in North Cyprus – places where history comes alive; where connections across epochs are made; where meanings are found and inspiration gained. One such place is the citadel in Famagusta on the eastern coast of North Cyprus. The citadel is part of the Venetian defensive walls that were built around the town and port of Famagusta after the island came under the control of Venice in 1489, although it did stand alone as a moated fortress protecting the harbour from raids for centuries beforehand. Today, the citadel is a major attraction in North Cyprus, partly owing to one William Shakespeare! The Othello Connection Written around 1603, Othello is one of Shakespeare’s most famous works. This story of love, jealousy, treachery and betrayal involves Othello – a Moorish general in the Venetian army, who is posted to Cyprus to help defend the island against the Ottomans. From Act II onwards the play is set in Cyprus; the location widely believed to be that of Famagusta, even though Shakespeare himself never visited the island. Entering the citadel under the sculpted winged lion of St Mark, the patron saint of Venice, you get a real sense of stepping back in time to Shakespeare’s world. The wooden entrance door is in fact one of the oldest surviving of its kind in Cyprus. Inside Othello Tower, archways from the courtyard lead down to hidden passages and rooms that are great fun for all the family to explore. The vaulted hall of the citadel is spectacular. When the Lusignans occupied Cyprus prior to the arrival of the Venetians, this hall was used as a dining hall. Close your eyes and you might even catch the passing scent of a feast fit for a king! Getting to Famagusta Unless your holiday is based at Famagusta you will need to arrange car hire. North Cyprus has one airport at Ercan near Nicosia. Rentals may be collected at the airport, from where Famagusta is about 50kms east. Head out north on the main road from the airport and you will find signs to Famagusta.
